Episode Recap - “In Which Dell Finds His Fight”

Season 1, Episode 9
First aired: December 5, 2007
The guys hang out with Sam as he tries to make a workable volcano for his daughter Maya’s science project. They tell Sam not to do it just to keep Naomi happy, because, after all, they’re divorced. They ask Sam if he’s back together with Naomi and Sam denies sleeping with Naomi, but Cooper doesn’t believe him.
Cooper and Charlotte are in bed and keeping up their secret affair. Charlotte is just as bossy in bed as she is in real life. Check out this clip for further evidence of that:
Yeah, BOSSY. When Charlotte goes into the bathroom, Cooper steals her notes about a very successful father’s parenting class she runs. He decides to do this at Oceanside Wellness Center with him and Pete as instructors. He even calls up Charlotte’s class roster. Charlotte finds out and tells him they are through.
Despite all her threats, Charlotte does come over to Cooper’s later that night. They end up in bed together, where Cooper asks if they’re dating. Charlotte says if having dirty sex on a regular basis is dating, then yes.
Addison knows Sam and Naomi have done it, and talks to Naomi about what she wants out of the relationship. Naomi tells her she should worry about her own relationship with Pete. She takes this advice and tells Pete they should be just friends. Here’s a great clip highlighting that, along with some key points to the episode:
Sam asks Naomi if she told anyone about their affair because he wants to keep it quiet. Naomi doesn’t like this idea, and accuses Sam of being afraid of getting too serious. Since he left the first time without giving her a reason, who is to say he won’t do it again?
Dell is not himself and confesses that he thinks his grandfather is being abused at the nursing home. Sam examines Dell’s grandpa but is not sure if there’s really abuse there. Violet and Naomi talk to Sam about Dell and tell him he should take Dell seriously. Sam wonders why Dell makes such an impression on the women.
Sam catches Naomi in her office and starts loving up on her. Naomi tells him she doesn’t want to keep their relationship a secret. Dell walks in on Sam and Naomi while they’re arguing and confronts Sam about why he upsets Naomi. Dell confesses to Sam that he loves Naomi. Sam later tells Naomi Dell is a child and he’s had it with him.
Addison treats the same couple that had the problem having sex on their honeymoon. They find out the husband is sterile, and go over options to have a child. At first the husband suggests using his brother’s sperm, but the wife rejects this idea at the last minute. Finally, Addison and Naomi decide to use a rare method where Addison extracts a sperm from his body to inject into his wife.
Addison sees the cute cop (guest star David Sutcliffe) in the waiting room. She talks to Naomi about maybe having a fling with him, and Naomi encourages her to do it. Every time they try and talk, however, they get interrupted. Pete tells Addison that dating is a numbers game, and you’ve got to take a chance. Addison takes his advice and goes to the police station to see the cute cop.
Cooper is avoiding Violet, and she think it’s because she made the suggestion that they become friends with benefits. Violet asks Cooper if he wants to grab a drink and he declines, still acting weird. Violet figures out he has a girlfriend, and tells him she’s happy for him. As he leaves for his date, however, she looks on sadly.
Dell finds out Sam and Naomi are having sex. Sam gets the nursing home files and decides to look into it closer. He goes with Dell to the nursing home and finds that they are having boxing matches. Dell’s grandpa knocks out his opponent and Sam realizes he’s had a heart attack. He doesn’t make it. His grandpa explains to them why they all decided to have the fighting matches, and it’s because when you get so old you lose people in your life you would have fought for. You forget what it’s like to care about something that much.
Dell grabs Naomi, kisses her, and tells her: “I don’t have it all together, but I’m not a kid. I’m a man, who loves you, who’s going to fight for you.” Then Sam walks in and kisses Naomi. He tells Naomi to go ahead and let everybody know they’re seeing each other.
Pete sees Sam kiss Naomi and asks Dell what’s going on. Dell tells Pete that Sam is fighting for Naomi, and that she’s worth it. All this talk about fighting for someone you care about prompts Pete to ring Addison’s doorbell. There is no answer.
