The Music of Private Practice

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

One of the things I like about Private Practice is the music. The producers do a great job of choosing just the right tune to go along with the scene.

Perhaps the most famous example of this is in the very first Private Practice episode titled, “In Which We Meet Addison, A Nice Girl From Somewhere Else.” This is the great scene where Addison gets out of the shower and dances around her brand new house naked to the song of “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’” by Scissor Sisters. Here’s a clip:

The music provides the perfect vibe to Addy’s new life, and Kate Walsh does an awesome job of dancing around with (and without) a towell. I can’t imagine doing that in front of a whole crew of people! The privacy of my house? Maybe. (Probably.)

Another great song choice was in the most recent episode of Private Practice, “In Which Dell Finds His Fight.” If you’ll remember, Cooper and Charlotte are in bed again, Dell kisses Naomi, Addison arrives at the police station[/tag] looking for that adorable cop, and this song plays in the background:

sonya.jpgThe song is both sad and sweet. When I first heard it I thought it was actually Nora Jones singing it. But no, it’s by Sonya Kitchell.

Another favorite choice is from the episode “In Which Sam Gets Taken for a Ride.” This was the episode with three births: the one in the birthing pool, the one at the convenience store, and the one with the woman that had three boys and wanted a girl.

The woman who gave birth in the tub had just lost her husband who happened to be a cop. That’s how Addison ends up meeting the cute cop to begin with. (He asks her out but then she has to say no because she’s supposed to meet up with Pete. Of course, later Pete stands her up and doesn’t tell her why. Oh… the drama!)

Back to the woman in the tub, though. She’s freaking out (and rightfully so) because her husband isn’t there and “You Have Been Loved” plays in the background:

Later, as the episode comes to a close, Pete arrives at Violet’s house (instead of Addison’s) and Cooper goes by Addison (after leaving Violet’s) and Sam arrives late to the office where Naomi is working. As all these storylines wrap up, “Say It’s Possible” by Terra Naomi plays in the background:

What a great voice this girl has, and so uplifting and moving all at the same time. Here’s the original video for this song which is very well done:

Perhaps the best song choice in Private Practice is in the episode, “In Which Addison Finds the Magic.” Pete is coming to grips with his wife’s death and goes to her grave to let out his frustrations and feelings and pent up emotions. Violet is still trying to get over Alan and finally has the courage to delete his one remaining voicemail message.

While all this is going on, Matthew Perryman Jones’ “Save You” plays in the background:

10 Greatest Moments of Private Practice (So Far)

Friday, December 7th, 2007

addy_3.jpg

10.
When Addison goes downstairs for coffee, and the camera shows a close up of her high-heeled foot tapping impatiently. (If only for what ends up happening to the shoe she’s wearing.)

9.
The morning after: When the guys are avoiding the girls and vice versa. Poor Dell is the only one left in the dark. What’s great about this is how the guys go off to one room and the girls head to another, and they each nervously wonder what the other group is saying.

8.

Dell’s attempt to woo Naomi with his grandmother’s baked goods. If only for the line: “That boy is baking cakes at me!”

7.

When Addison and Pete kiss in the break room and finally agree to get together later that night. If moment would have turned out any other way, their push and pull flirtation would have been too drawn out. Instead it prompts the line, “What are we? Twelve?”

6.
10.jpgWhen Cooper and Violet go to Addison’s get together. Coop tells Violet “You’re loud and have a lot of curly hair.” It’s clear these are the things he loves about her and the way he says this makes her pause for a moment and see that he really digs her.

5.

Naomi and Sam having sex on the conference room table. Don’t misunderstand me here, I don’t love the Sam and Naomi relationship and don’t find it believable in the slightest. But this scene came on the heels of two “let down” relationship moments with other characters, so it was a nice surprise. Besides that, Taye Diggs is hot, and him naked on a conference room table is even hotter.

4.

When Addison tells Pete: “You’ve been downgraded to acquaintance. I’m moving on.” She doesn’t spend hours second guessing herself – or wondering – what’s wrong with HER. Instead, she knows Pete’s got issues, and she’s not gonna dive into them with him.

3.

When Addison cries in Naomi’s lap after having a very bad day. With the dynamics of the show, sometimes you forget that Addison and Naomi are friends. Best friends. They’re so close, in fact, that Naomi is a big reason why Addison moved out to California to begin with. It was nice to be reminded of that, in addition to seeing Addison’s vulnerability.

2.

The moment Cooper shows up at the bar to meet his online date and sees that it’s Charlotte King. This is so much better than the moment they actually wind up in bed together. When Cooper sees Charlotte at first he backs up, ready to bolt, but then stops and smiles. He knows he can have fun with this little coincidence.

1.

Addison dancing around naked in her new house. There’s nothing like the freedom that comes from starting over. New zip code. New place to work. New friends. New life.

About Private Practice

Private Practice is a spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy. Kate Walsh starts as Dr. Addison Montgomery, a surgeon who leaves Seattle (not to mention a broken marriage and messed up relationship) for LA to join a private practice of physicians founded by Naomi and Sam Bennett (Audra McDonald and Taye Diggs). The Bennett’s have formed a unique co-op clinic, including a psychiatrist (Amy Brenneman), pediatrician (Paul Adelstein), alternative medicine specialist (Tim Daly), and a hunky receptionist/surfer boy who is also studying to be a midwife (Chris Lowell). For Addison and her cohorts, their professional lives are solid; it's their private lives that need a little practice.
