Amy Brenneman Says Happy 35th to Ms.

Ms. Magazine is 35, and Amy Brenneman (along with her former costar Tyne Daly) are helping to celebrate. (Brenneman and Daly are pictured here when they appeared at the 10th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.) Ms. And the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) are holding an event tonight at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. Featured speakers include Gloria Steinem, Carol Moseley Braun, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Brenneman (and Daly) will also be in attendance, along with Kathy Najimy, Margaret Cho, and Alfre Woodard.
Brenneman is known as a fearless activist for women’s issues.
(She’s pictured here at the March for Women’s Lives on the National Mall in Washington DC in April 2004.) I found an interesting online chat with her from a few years back in which she talks about her support of Pro-Choice and why. When asked why she takes this position, she says:
“I am passionately pro-choice because I believe in a woman’s right to use her body in a way she believes in. I wouldn’t say that I am pro-abortion because I believe that every pregnancy deserves careful thought and consideration and all options should be open to conscientious women.”
I found her comments very interesting, especially given the all or nothing view of most people on the subject. This is one area in which women can come together and agree to disagree if need be, but shouldn’t attack each other. Women need the support of other women. Even if you don’t agree with what someone is doing, taking an arrogant view of the situation and judging someone else will only serve to polarize your viewpoints further. The more that happens, communication becomes lost. The only way to learn from one another is by listening completely so you understand where people are coming from.
